Fabio Silva has indicated that he may have preferred to stay at FC Porto for ‘one or two more years’ instead of making that £35 million move to Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers, speaking to Voetbal International.
The phrase ‘too much, too soon’ comes to mind.
Following his big-money arrival in the summer of 2020, Silva may have been hoping to be eased into life at Molineux. Well, the horror injury suffered by Raul Jimenez a couple of weeks into the season soon put pay to that.
As if the pressure of a £35 million price-tag wasn’t enough. Silva, at the age of just 18, then found himself being asked to step into Jimenez’s boots, starting 11 Premier League games during his debut season in English football.
Now, with the benefit of hindsight, Silva wonders if he’d have been better off continuing his development back home at Porto for another season or two.
Wolves’ Fabio Silva now impressing on loan at PSV Eindhoven
“If amounts of forty million euros are paid, clubs sometimes cannot refuse,” Silva explains. “That was the case with me. I had just turned eighteen. It hurts a bit that I wasn’t able to show more at Porto.
“It’s not that I think at 18-years-old; ‘I’m going to the Wolves, playing in the Premier League’. I had no control over that. It was the decision of the club and, given the transfer fee, I can understand.
“Maybe I would have liked to stay one more year, two more years. But I’m trying not to think about it anymore.”
Still only 20, Silva’s future appears uncertain heading into the summer. He’s scored 16 goals this season during loan spells at Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven, though it remains to be seen if the Portugal U21 international is part of Julen Lopetegui’s plans at Molineux.

“In my first two seasons with Wolves, I played 54 games in the Premier League,” Silva adds. “People look at how many goals I have scored (four), but they don’t look at the number of minutes I played.
“I was mainly a substitute, which makes sense when you’re so young. But because of that transfer fee, all eyes were on me. Fortunately, I quickly learned to let it slide.
“The moment I step onto the field, I never think about the 40 million euro (fee). On the field I always forget everything. I can have a hundred problems, but on the field I am a butterfly, completely free. It is for me the best place to be.”
