Before interviews exposing his homopobia, before his religious fanaticism, before Sugar Tits, Mel Gibson was a beloved rising star, who was both handsome and a good actor.
TCM is revisiting his early films on Wednesday, June 22nd by airing The Bounty, Mad Max, Ransom (Okay, not so early), Mrs. Soffel and The Year of Living Dangerously. (he and Sigourney are gorgeous in this).
I'm curious how they will introduce this evening -- especially on Pride Month.

I’d rather watch a Mel Sharples marathon
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 21, 2022 1:15 AM |
Mel was gorgeous beyond words, talented, and by all accounts a hardworking, fun-loving guy, beloved by his fellow actors and film crews alike. A shame he spiraled downward. His early work is some of his best, along with his charming aussie accent that sadly faded away with his sanity.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 21, 2022 1:15 AM |
The Bounty was a beautiful movie. So was TYOLD. I'm curious how they've held up.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 21, 2022 1:22 AM |
Mrs. Soffel is one of my favorite movies. I loved Mad Max too. He was truly beautiful in his youth. Personally,I dont care about his drunken rant. God knows I had a few myself in my partying days. He makes one mistake and has to pay for life ?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 21, 2022 1:24 AM |
Oh, I'm sorry. I plan to wash my hair that evening. Maybe next time?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 21, 2022 1:25 AM |
I like him. His rant was hilarious, sugartits. The outrage was ridiculous. He's a handsome fucker and his movies are good. I hate the new puritans.

Gallipoli (1981) and The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) are still excellent viewing.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 21, 2022 1:29 AM |
Fairly unknowns Liam Neeson and Daniel Day Lewis were in The Bounty.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 21, 2022 1:31 AM |
They are both amazing movies R8, and anyone who refuses to watch them purely because of Gibson is an idiot.

The world loves Mel. TCM's ratings will go through the roof.

What do you think you’re looking at, sugar tits?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 21, 2022 1:35 AM |
I think Mel was one of the last great movie stars, until his personal life started to make waves and take away from his films.
Watch something like Tequila Sunrise. My God, he was gorgeous. He and Michelle Pfeiffer were gorgeous together. Who today in cinema can generate that kind of sexiness and charisma on-screen?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 21, 2022 1:38 AM |
Screw that. Let them do a Sigourney Weaver marathon, and then I'll watch that shit!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 23, 2022 3:32 AM |
So the same people who whine about "woke," get triggered by Mel Gibson?
Big fucking surprise. "You have to tolerate anyone who offends you, but i don't have to tolerate anyone who offends me."

Not even if was paid to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 23, 2022 4:15 AM |
He was like Tom Cruise, handsome but not very talented and an absolute moron.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 23, 2022 4:40 AM |
And short like Cruise too. But with a huge head. Like a pea dispenser.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 23, 2022 4:51 AM |
His movie Signs was awful. Didn't deserve the Oscar for Bravefart.
Don't hold his rant against him, we've all said dumb things when we've been loaded, plus this guy clearly suffered from alcoholism.

Way back in the 90s, before anyone knew what he was, Susan Sarandon said that for someone so beautiful on the outside, he certainly was ugly on the inside. So there's at least one person who didn't think he was so great. His chief defenders now are ex-junkies, Xtian crazies and wingnuts.
And his issues extend far beyond his rant. Ask the babymama whom he punched and knocked her teeth out.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 23, 2022 10:13 AM |
I submit there was no more beautiful or sexy man on screen than Mel in The Year of Living Dangerously.

Good grief this site is full of losers. It wasn't "one drunken rant." it was years of monstrous behavior, including tons of seriously gross homophobia. Remember Winona Ryder's story about him calling her an "oven dodger"? Stick your "cancel culture" and "woke" little baby whimpers up your asses, you bunch of stupid self-hating anti-semitic shit-for-brains
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 23, 2022 2:32 PM |
There was a Barbara Walters interview with him from way back. He was an entitled little cunt. The arrogance and misogyny dripped off him. It was quite something to behold.

I watched especially his early movies because he looked and sounded gorgeous on screen -- I don't like the rants he was reported to have committed, but that has nothing to do with his work-time accomplishments of keeping me entertained visually in his films. (This, in spite of Ben Mankiewicz of course devoting almost 3/4th of his intro to "The Bounty" on TCM last evening to Gibson's offscreen faux pas -- of course, you know he couldn't resist it.) I was reminded of what a gorgeous movie "Bounty" was, including and especially Mel shirtless in it -- my, oh, my. :D

Mel Gibson's father was an extreme bigot and religious zealot. He would rant privately and publicly about Jews, gays, blacks, women, and promote conspiracy theories, etc. This is the environment Mel was brought up in, so he had that embedded inside his psyche. Still, it's less of an excuse when you consider he was fortunate to have been exposed to a more normal and tolerate mindset and culture in the acting world, but unless one can acknowledge their own prejudices, it's a deep hole to crawl out of, especially when one is a known alcoholic.

Mel was absolutely breathtaking in The Year of Living Dangerously and in the early Lethal Weapon before alcohol destroyed his looks and brain.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 24, 2022 12:40 AM |
Future audiences are going to want to see Mel Gibson films.... to prevent them being screened is only going to give them a mystique or aura they don't deserve. Let them rise or fall on their own merits. His behavior will be a mere footnote in the coming years.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 24, 2022 2:23 AM |

Gibson would step on your face and call you a fag if he had the chance. But please continue with the euphemisms for this piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 24, 2022 3:26 AM |
R45 but he won't have the chance and I doubt he does or wants to go around calling people names at least when he's sober. And who hasn't when drunk said something we regretted. Get over it! He's done nothing to you. Don't take it so personally. Why so bitter and angry?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 24, 2022 4:30 AM |
That's one of the reasons he's imperfect, R45.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 24, 2022 4:30 AM |
Come on, you guys. He was pretty but he was a terrible actor. He's OK in film when he's doing day-to-day handsome dude stuff, but as soon as he's asked to emote he's got a stock eyes-popping expression which would be unsubtle on a silent movie comedian. It is evident all the time in Lethal Weapon. I will grant him that he took risks and tried to extend his range, but his talent was really limited. He was a better director, if you liked the kind of content he favoured.
When he was at NIDA Judy Davis played Juliet opposite his Romeo. He played Romeo again just after he graduated and I did see that (and can't un-see it). NIDA's production must have looked like Duet for Stradivarius and Ukelele. First time a Juliet said "Wherefore art THOU Romeo?"
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 24, 2022 4:39 AM |
The Year of Living Dangerously was when he was at peak beauty - there are a couple of scenes (one he’s in a tux, the other he’s wet in a car with Sigourney) where he’s, for want of a less Mary! word - breathtaking.
Having said that it’s always amusing to see the director try to cover up the height differential between the two. Mel was beautiful but never tall. Sigourney was both. Still is, actually.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 24, 2022 4:48 AM |
R46 you doubt he wants to go around calling people names? The stupidity one expects from a Gibson fan I guess.

Well excuse a 21 year old rookie with an Australian accent for not being Olivier.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 24, 2022 4:54 AM |
Self-medicated with alcohol to treat his Manic Depression? The lovable Mel is as real as the monstrous Mel. Probably stayed on meds early in his career because he WANTED an acting career and he had a stable married life. Beautiful to look at action hero with a flair for comedy who appealed to women and men. He has always reminded me of Steve McQueen. Sorry r48 but he was doing some serious acting in TYOLD. And Ransom. Maverick is a perfect fucking movie. He’s a sorry SOB of a human being but he’s a talented SOB.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 24, 2022 4:55 AM |
R48 I also saw that NIDA production of R&J - I was at UNSW at the time studying drama.
Nobody was watching him for his performance - he was famously beautiful even then.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 24, 2022 5:25 AM |
As an actor, he’s a pretty good movie star. As a person, he’s loathsome. As a director, he’s a tremendously complicated figure. Braveheart is a vile movie in a lot of ways, but some of the technical craft is impeccable. It’s the rare movie that I hate yet still have to admit some grudging respect.
He’s almost like a modern day Leni Riefenstahl, which is a comparison that Gibson would hate. He would never want to be compared to a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 24, 2022 5:27 AM |
Young Mel Gibson was fcking hot 🥵
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 24, 2022 5:30 AM |
Gawd, he was GORGEOUS.
Totally blew it, and for what?
Nothing.
Freakin’ idiot.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 24, 2022 5:31 AM |
He never had a convincing Australian accent, R51. Australians thought it was hilarious that Mad Max 1 was dubbed in "American" for the States because Gibson always sounded slightly American to us.
I was comparing him with Judy Davis, who was also a rookie with an [actual] Australian accent, so what's your point?
Sorry, Merryprankster, but we'll have to agree to disagree, though I will say Maverick was a perfect movie for Gibson's limited range. I'm with R54: as an actor he was a pretty good movie star. In terms of looks and charisma, he was a better movie star.
I just can't shake the feeling that if he was ugly the DL would be considerably less excited about his talent.

His Australian accent in TYOLD was completely convincing, because it was his at the time.
I went to high school with him and his brothers (there were a bunch of them) - Aussie accents all of them.

Yeah, he was haf in Year of Living Dangerously which is one of my favorite films. But that's my fave film genre. Historical political drama.
This film also introduced me to the sublime Dame Kiri.

Gibson did his best to talk Heath Ledger, to whom he'd been a mentor figure ever since they'd appeared together in The Patriot, out of playing Ennis in Brokeback Mountain. They stopped being friends when Heath took the role anyway.
It's always sad to see how far in the can so many DLers are for attractive white men who loathe them. So much self-hatred here.

The Year of Living Dangerously is owned by Billy aka the fabulous Linda Hunt, you twats.
And those dreamy blue eyes on young Gibson? Very nice until they reveal the sociopathic rage of their owner about a minute into any interview.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 24, 2022 11:50 AM |
In Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously, he is absolutely sublime. I saw these in the theater, was besotted, and I thought I was seeing the next Cary Grant. But I think he went downhill fast. Even by the first Lethal Weapon movie, he was already losing his looks, his charm, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 24, 2022 11:54 AM |
r57 well, duh. We love our movie stars because they are beautiful. Would we be interested in Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, etc if they were busted? Mel is not in their class as an actor (well, he's better than Hudson). But he showed potential in some films to be better. He's lovely in YOLD, Mrs Soffel. Also in Tequila Sunrise. Even late he could give a good performances, like in Conspiracy Theory. But no doubt about it, he's a total nut and toxic human being. Except to Jodie and Robert Downey, Jr., I guess.

Depends on which movies. YOLD and Ms. Soffel show off his beauty and there are a couple more I find entertaining. And guess what? I watch old Charlton Heston movies too. IMO Mel's biggest poblem was how drunk on relgion he became. And also his alcoholism. Male menopause is real. All the pretty boys go off the deep end when they start aging out and see their looks going away. Johnny Depp being a good example. He is also a druggie and an alcoholic. Heston 's career went in the toilet and he started reciting the Bible for money...like Moses. Then he was early stage dementia.

He is also hot as fuck in The River (1984) with Sissy Spacek.

I don't compartmentalize well, so probably not. When I think somebody is a truly vile asshole, I can't just shut off that part of my brain to enjoy them in something. It's always there, bugging me. I somewhat envy the people who CAN do that, though.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 24, 2022 3:31 PM |
Although eye candy when young, Mel Gibson is a rampant lifelong homophobe, antisemite, racist, and misogynist. He's too old and fuckfaced nowadays, he's just disgusting as he's always been, and his eventual death will be the Great equalizer.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 24, 2022 3:36 PM |
His movie about Jesus was brutal and sadistic in the extreme. He is someone IMO who proves the dark side of a very Catholic upbringing. The bigotry infused into Catholicism, the irony, just a hateful religion that doesn't seem to grasp the Christ of the gospels.

by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 24, 2022 4:14 PM |
I totally agree, r77. He was raised by a bigoted monster who considered the Catholic Church too liberal! so he founded an uber conservative and cult-like off-shoot of the Catholic Church that is even more sick and twisted in it’s religious ideology. Mel pours beaucoup bucks into that “church”. No different than being indoctrinated into Scientology.
