Non-smoking actors who smoked for roles and almost died

One of Brooke Shields's career highlights:

[quote]Hollywood star Brooke Shields took method acting a bit too far in her latest film role. Trying to get into her character - a chain-smoking neurotic - she lit up so many cigarettes that she had to be carried off the set for emergency treatment. 'I chain-smoked so much I got nicotine poisoning,' confessed the 34-year-old actress, who got through 50 cigarettes in just a few hours. 'They had to hook me up to an oxygen machine.'", The Express (UK), Nov. 6, '99

Who else has gone to these heights?

She's dumb as fuck.

Method acting is such a joke.

I once read that David Lynch convinced nonsmoker Laura Dern to attempt to smoke an entire pack of cigarettes at once (all rolled together and ignited) on the set of Wild at Heart, and she passed out and fell off her chair after attempting one hit.

Prop ciggies and cigars exist. I don't buy either story. Sounds more like trying to drum up some DRAHMAH!

Re: Brooke, what movie was this?

Gene Tierney infamously started smoking to lower her voice because directors complained it was too high-pitched. She ended up becoming a hardcore chainsmoker for over five decades before emphysema finally got her.

The prop cigarettes are just herbal cigarettes, R4. They're not tobacco so there's no nicotine to get you addicted, but you're still inhaling burning herbs and tar. It's not really any different from a health perspective, and they're apparently horrendous tasting/smelling and give people headaches.

R4 the quote from OP was from a 1999 article, so presumably the role was in After Sex or The Disenchanted Forest, based on a quick look at Brooke's filmography. I'm not familiar with either of those movies though so I can't confirm. IIRC, Brooke became a smoker in her adult years and it was hilarious given all the non-smoking campaigns she did (including the iconic "smoking kills. if you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life" quote).

When did Brooke say that, R7? Was she a kid at the time? If not, that's a pretty daft quote coming from a Princeton grad.

Thanks r7! Interesting.

R4 True that the props aren't exactly healthy, but they aren't going to give you a nicotine "OD".

r8 She's never been the sharpest tool in the shed...

Sorry, I meant to reply to r6 re: the herbal props.

Is Brooke known for being thick R9? Did she buy her way into Princeton?

Sarah Jessica Parker started smoking for her Carrie Bradshaw role and to this day hasn't stopped. It hasn't killed her yet, but she appears damn close

Herbal cigarettes can also bring on sudden heart failure for some people.

Actors are so goddamn dumb. Real alcohol and cigarettes on set are ILLEGAL.

Agree r4, the whole story sounds like a lie.
