Her father Henry Livas is a retired engineer from NASA-Langley and also served on the Virginia Beach Planning Commission. One grandfather taught architecture at Hampton University and founded a firm that still exists in Norfolk. Her other grandfather taught high school physics and was the first African-American City Councilman in Virginia Beach. Both grandmothers were teachers.
