Natalise (Natalise + the Sunset Run) began making music at a young age. She started by playing piano at three, dancing by the age of seven, and singing in church choir by the age of eight, That’s where she found the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she officially became a classically trained pianist and vocalist.
She began using music to express her own experiences in love and heartache. Her newest song, “The Lucky Ones,” off of her latest album Glimpses of the Sun is all about being grateful that you’re alive everyday.
When Natalise wrote the “The Lucky Ones,” she was going through a deep introspection and sadness for a period of time after having watched two loved ones around her get diagnosed with stage 1 and 2 forms of cancer. “They were both very young, beautiful, and talented, said Natalise. “It was a shock to the system and really one of those times you ask, “Why them? Why do bad things happen to good people?”
She was then faced with health scare of her own. “I think that when you are faced with a possibility of life being finite, a wave of memories from the past and hopes for the future flash by,” she said. “You reconsider what is really important. And you start coming to the realization that life is pretty short. You have to make every moment count.”
At an ASCAP event (a performing rights organization), “The Lucky Ones” was played during a conference on a panel. After the session, a man in his late 50’s came up to Natalise crying. He told her, “I’m a stage 4 cancer survivor. I have four kids and a wife. I didn’t think I’d be standing here today.”
He continued continued telling her, “This song… it reminded me of the fact that I am grateful… every day. I am so lucky. My family…we are the lucky ones. Thank you so much for writing this song. People who have gone through what I’ve been through need to hear this.”
It’s moments like that, that make artists like Natalise feel like their music and songwriting is worth something. It’s moments like that, that show that anyone can be touched, even if it’s simply by a piece of music.
