Though he's always struggled he's also always been able to keep that part of him locked away so he can't hurt people, especially the ones he loves the most. It seems as if he ends up failing to control his bad side and eventually showed it so much to this person that they ended up leaving. He loves her and is trying to tell her that he never meant to treat her the way he did and never wanted to treat her that way but he just couldn't stop himself. He's also trying to tell her that he's better now and he has been able to control that side again and he hopes that she can see that eventually.
