Sunderland sacked manager Simon Grayson on Tuesday night.
Sunderland’s miserable form saw them draw 3-3 with Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night – and that proved to be Simon Grayson’s final game in charge.
The Black Cats’ shambolic defending and crippling home form was on show again on Tuesday, with a point leaving them 22nd in the Championship table, three points from safety.
Just five minutes after the final whistle at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, Sunderland announced the sacking of manager Grayson, just four months after prising him away from Preston North End.
Grayson’s league record for Sunderland ends with one win in 15 games and 30 goals conceded, and whilst his reign barely got started, most fans feel that it was the right decision.
Bookmakers have already started offering odds on Grayson’s successor as Sunderland chase yet another new manager – and here are some of the main names in the frame tonight.
John O’Shea: 5/6
The surprise favourite this evening is Sunderland defender O’Shea, in what would be a surprise and somewhat bizarre move. The 36-year-old is coming towards the end of his career, and he is now the odds-on favourite for a shock turn to management. With over 200 appearances for Sunderland, O’Shea has been a great servant for the Black Cats since joining from Manchester United in 2011, but fans would surely see this is a major gamble.
Phil Brown: 2/1
A boyhood Sunderland fan who has supported the club for more than 50 years, Southend United boss Brown would surely find it too difficult to turn down a move to the Stadium of Light if Sunderland came calling. The former Hull City and Preston North End boss hasn’t managed inside the top two tiers of English football since 2011, but his win rate of 40% at Southend may just attract some interest.
Ally McCoist: 4/1
Scottish boss McCoist is a surprise name in the frame for Sunderland this evening, despite the fact that he hasn’t managed a club since leaving Rangers in 2014. McCoist, 55, won over 72% of his games at Rangers as he attempted to guide the club back up through the leagues, but hasn’t got back into management for nearly three years. Now one of the favourites for the Sunderland job, McCoist could make a surprise comeback.

Kevin Phillips: 16/1
Former Sunderland striker Phillips is again being touted for the job, having been mentioned over the summer. Currently coaching at Derby County alongside Gary Rowett, Phillips is a hero at Sunderland having hit 130 goals in 235 games for the Black Cats following a move for Watford in 1997. Fans may love Phillips to return, and he is a dark horse at 16/1.
Robbie Stockdale: 18/1
Currently serving as Sunderland’s caretaker manager alongside Billy McKinlay, Stockdale has already had one caretaker spell in charge of Sunderland back in 2015. The 37-year-old, formerly of Middlesbrough, will take joint charge of this weekend’s game against Boro in the hope of impressing and landing the job. At 18/1, Stockdale is a name to keep an eye on for Sunderland fans.
