A number of Birmingham City fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Jude Bellingham’s performance in the 3-0 away loss to Portsmouth in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The England youth international striker, aged 16 years and 39 days, became the youngest ever Blues player when he was handed his debut at Pompey on Tuesday night, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Bellingham, part of a youthful line-up at Fratton Park including three other debutants and seven players aged 23 and under, beat the record set by Trevor Francis, who played for Birmingham at 16 years and 139 days in 1970.

Although Pep Clotet’s charges were soundly beaten in the game, there were some positives, in particular Bellingham’s composure on the ball and close control, part of a display which bodes well for the player and the club going forward.

Here is what some Birmingham fans wrote on social media about the highly rated teenager’s performance:

Bellingham is going to be quite something. Medina looks tidy. Bajrami looks really good. We’re playing our full youth side against probably the best side in league one. How fans are moaning is beyond me. #BCFC #KRO

Instead of focusing on negatives, we should look at positives from tonight. Bellingham looked class. Bajrami is a bruiser. Craig Gardner was pinging balls around like a world cup winner. Seddon has settled into that position really well. Crowley comfortable on the ball. #BCFC

Bellingham, Seddon, Crowley and even Gardner were the only good thing to come out of tonight!

Reflections of the game… Bellingham is a baller and linked up well with Crowley. I like Seddon at LWB and Bajrami looks a prospect. Odin has something to offer too.

Lakin and Josh DC look miles off it, can’t see them cutting it. #BCFC

Boys v men.. the men were always going to win, no question. It was exciting to see Jude Bellingham play and I can’t lie, he doesn’t look far from first team. If he had more experience up top with him today I felt he would’ve caused pompy massive trouble #Bcfc

Bit of a weird team selection tonight considering he’s trying to implement a new system. Surely play the first team and give them a chance to have majority of the possession. Only shining light was Bellingham and Crowley. Not overly worried yet. But a strange one tonight. #Bcfc

Bellingham did well tonight but we’re making him out to be Messi already he the basics well and looked better than most of the others bar Crowley and Gardner out there but he didn’t exactly blow my mind. Think he’ll good but need to avoid inflating expectations #bcfc

Analysis of last nights game –

Medina – shaking, needs time to adapt.

JSC – starting to agree with the Sunderland fans now

Stockdale – should never start over Camp.

Bellingham – huge potential, great baller.

Bajrami – looks a good ball-playing defender, decent. #BCFC

According to the Daily Mail, Birmingham fought off competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, to sign Bellingham on a scholarship deal this summer.

Oxford United manager Pep Clotet looks on prior to the Sky Bet League One match between Milton Keynes Dons and Oxford United at StadiumMK on September 2, 2017 in Milton Keynes, England.
